Louis J. Taber

Taber was Ohio’s first Director of Agriculture, a Master of the Ohio State Grange and Master of the National Grange.

Three presidents appointed Taber to important positions. President Wilson appointed him to the Hoover Wheat Price Commission in 1917. President Harding appointed him a delegate to the National Agriculture Conference in 1922 and President Coolidge appointed him to the Agricultural Commission in 1924. He was named to Hoover’s Farm Board in 1932.

Devoutly religious, Taber served six terms as president of the Ohio Council of Churches. Taber helped organize the Farmers and Traders Life Insurance Company, a Grange Company, to bring this service to rural people. He was chairman of the board at the time of his death.
